Exhibition — ANKARUDDEN
We are pleased to share that Matthias van Arkel’s exhibition Ankarudden opened on February 6 at Balazsi Gallery in Mallorca and runs through March 6.
The collaboration emerged through a direct connection initiated by David Franzén, linking van Arkel’s practice with Balazsi Gallery’s international collector base. The opening was framed by an intimate seated dinner inside the gallery for 60 invited collectors and their guests — a setting designed not as a typical vernissage, but as a considered encounter with the work.
Ankarudden continues van Arkel’s investigation into surface, depth and chromatic vibration. His layered resin paintings operate between painting and object, activating the surrounding architecture through colour intensity and material precision. The works shift with light, creating subtle movement within stillness — a quality particularly resonant in Mediterranean space and climate.
For private collectors, the exhibition underscores the long-term strength of van Arkel’s practice: materially rigorous, architecturally scalable and visually immersive. For art in architecture contexts, the works demonstrate how abstraction can anchor space without overwhelming it — offering presence rather than decoration.
This exhibition marks an important step in expanding van Arkel’s reach within Southern Europe, while reinforcing A Gallery AB’s focus on connecting artists with the right environments, collectors and architectural settings.
